This project is for the refurbishment and extension of a lower ground floor flat within the Canonbury Conservation Area. The existing building is a grand row of four storey terraced houses, built in the mid 19th Century, and subsequently subdivided into flats.

The current one bedroom flat has been previously extended with a single storey wrap around extension containing a small galley kitchen and bathroom. The flat is dark, with an over sized master bedroom and very little connection to the large South facing garden.

Our proposal is to reconfigure the internal spaces to add a second bedroom and bathroom, whilst partially demolishing the existing extension, replacing it with a new living and dining space connected directly to a sunken outdoor living area. The new addition is conceived as an extension to the original buildings plinth, constructed from light grey brickwork built on top of the garden's white retaining walls. Two vertical openings in the brickwork direct views over the raised areas of planting, and large glazed doors  open onto the decked garden.

The scheme received planning permission from Islington Council in December 2017, and is due to start on site in February 2018.
