Adding a substantial rear extension and an entirely new floor at roof level without overwhelming the existing building required careful thought about scale and materiality. The mansard is traditional in design, clad in natural slate with lead dormers, sitting comfortably within the conservation area. The rear extension takes a clearly contemporary approach, its stepped form breaking down the massing and giving it a sculptural quality. Pale buff brickwork with cast stone detailing links the extension visually to the house while giving it a distinct identity of its own.

The new open-plan kitchen, living, and dining space is anchored by exposed oak ceiling joists above the dining area, zoning it naturally within the wider space. A large rooflight floods this area with soft, filtered light, while an exposed brick wall echoes the materiality of the exterior extension, bringing warmth and texture from outside in. Full-height sliding doors open directly onto the garden, and a picture window positioned at the end of the dining table frames a quiet, considered view of the outside.

From the pale buff brickwork of the extension and the exposed oak within, to the natural slate of the mansard above, every material has been chosen with intention. The result is a home that feels genuinely crafted — warm, considered, and built to last.
