Oak kitchen and bold red tile island in renovation of Notting Hill terraced house - MarshKeene

Notting Hill House

Will and Bea had been living in their Notting Hill terrace for some time when they came to us. With a growing family on the way, they needed more space, more light, and a better connection to the garden — but they had no desire to move. The challenge was to unlock the full potential of a relatively compact footprint, and to do it without compromise.

The defining move was to relocate the kitchen and dining area down to the lower ground floor, where a direct relationship with the garden could finally be realised. A large walk-on rooflight floods the space with light from above, while a full-height pivot door and a generous window seat with picture window dissolve what had previously been a hard boundary between inside and out. The lower ground floor also accommodates a guest bedroom with en-suite, utility room, and guest WC — a considered reworking that makes every square foot count.

The interior is anchored by bespoke timber joinery finished in rich, deep tones, bringing warmth and character to otherwise pared-back rooms. The kitchen island, clad entirely in bold red tiles, provides a confident focal point, while large-format concrete-effect tiles and oak flooring bring a sense of calm and tactility throughout.

“The Marsh Keene team was all over every detail of our large and complex project from the start, always ensuring that we were fully informed every step of the way.”

The result is a home that feels entirely different — open, layered, and full of light — yet completely familiar to the people who live in it. Will and Bea have the family home they needed, and the one they always hoped was there.

“I cannot recommend Marsh Keene Architects highly enough… Hiring Harry and Jonty was the best decision we made and proved key to the success of our wonderful new home.”
