The clients wanted more space — for a growing family, for hosting, for living well — without losing the integrity of the existing building. The challenge was to extend meaningfully while respecting the Victorian architecture, and to bring a bold, considered interior sensibility to every room.

The rear extension is arranged over two storeys, each treated as a distinct element. At ground floor, a flat-roofed volume in pale brickwork features three arched doors with green-painted glazing, opening directly onto the garden — elegant in proportion and quietly confident in character. Above, a single-pitched rendered volume containing the master bedroom is set back from the ground floor extension, its modern detailing echoing the rendered finish of the existing house while clearly reading as something new. In the loft, a lead-clad dormer provides two children's bedrooms within a modest footprint, sitting discreetly within the conservation area. Rooflights maximise light into the kitchen below, while exposed oak joists add relief to the ceiling and help define the dining area within the open-plan ground floor.

Inside, the approach balances classic sensibility with a confident use of colour and material. A new staircase in pale oak runs elegantly through the house. The kitchen is bespoke and deep red, set against pale pink limewashed walls and finished with marble and oak worktops — bold without being loud. Chequerboard marble flooring, natural stone, and timber add texture and warmth throughout, their traditional character reinterpreted with modern precision. The result is a home that feels both rooted and alive — generous in spirit, rich in detail, and designed to grow with the family who will fill it.
